Materials: clear glasses of water, red, blue & yellow food coloring and a dropper
As you are reading the story to the children, show how mixing two or more colors makes another color. Follow what the mice in the book do and stop to ask children what color they think will show!!

Book – “Little Blue and Little Yellow”
Materials: yellow, blue and green construction paper torn into circles
As you read the book, ask the children to act out the story with their circles

Activities

Color Match – objective is to match the items with their color
Materials: Full pieces of different colored construction paper, a variety of random items that are primarily one color.
·         Place the different colored papers all around the room.
·         Place the random items in a bag or box and have each child choose 2 or 3 items and find the color that best matches.
·         Discuss the different “shades” of colors and/or why a child put an item where he or she put it (if it seems incorrect to you).

Outdoor Color Hunt – objective is to find different colored nature items
Materials: egg carton with 6 cups (cut a dozen in half), you will have to use a marker and color each cup a different color prior to the class.
·         Give each child an egg carton (or have them work in teams)
·         Send them out on a supervised hunt to find an item to put into each colored cup. The items they find must match the color of the cup.
·         You may help by “planting” colorful items outside (feathers, rocks, flowers, etc.)
·         Added bonus – leave one cup uncolored and challenge the children to find something unique to put in that cup

Crafts
            Scratch Off Paper
Materials: White paper, colored pencils, black crayons, popsicle sticks.
·         Each child should use different colored pencils and color to their heart’s content on a piece of white paper
·         Instruct them to use the black crayon and color over their colorful creation
·         After the colors have been covered by the black crayon, take the popsicle sticks and start “scratching” off the crayon in different places…see the colors pop out

Stained Glass
Materials: colored tissue paper torn into bits, wax paper, glue sticks.
·         Glue different pieces of tissue paper onto the wax paper
·         Overlap the colors and see what new colors form
·         Place a frame around the creation and you have instant art work
